Taking extra care, I get ready for an evening out with Edward. Despite my anxiety about life back home I can’t ignore my inner self begging to be noticed by a hot man. So, as Saskia requested, I make up my face exactly as she showed me and style my hair as it was intended to be worn when I had it cut. I’m also pleased to see the hint of a tan bringing me a healthy glow and overall feel quite satisfied with the results.

I decide to wear one of the charity shop borrows and pull on a Chloe dress that makes me feel like a million dollars. Maybe I’ll buy this one after all. Surely every woman deserves a piece like this in her wardrobe. It shouldn’t be too expensive because it is second hand after all.

After a splash of perfume, I am feeling much better. As I head out to find Edward things almost seem normal.

My heart beats a little faster as I see him waiting for me. He looks amazing in chinos and a smart white shirt. His tan is much deeper than mine and I can smell his distinctive aftershave from here. My heart flutters as he watches me approach with a blank face. This man is unreadable. I can never tell what he’s thinking and for all I know he is counting down the days to get shot of me.

He smiles and then looks at me with a concerned expression. Suddenly, I feel nervous. What does that look mean? Do I look like an old person trying to look young? Is my dress transparent in the sun’s rays and he can see my hold it all in passion killer underwear through the sheer fabric? Is my make-up smudged or is my perfume making him feel sick? My anxiety is now off the scale as he smiles and nods towards the chair next to him.

“Sit down Amanda, I’ve had an email from the moneypennies.

Ok, now my heart is beating like a drummer at a rock concert. There’s something about the look in his eyes that tells me I’m not going to like what he’s about to tell me.”

I sit down and try to look unconcerned but I know my expression must be giving me away because he smiles softly.

“It’s ok, I think?”

What does that mean? I think what?

He flips open his iPad and searches for the email. Then he pushes the computer into my hands and says gently.

“Here’s the email I received. I’m sure it’s fine.”

As I take the device from his hands I feel my heart hammering with trepidation. Am I ready to discover the fate of my mother? Will I crumble in front of the object of my heart’s desire and put him off me forever?

With a deep breath I try to focus on the words on the screen and then frantically scan the neatly typed lines that may cause my world to implode in 3 seconds flat.
